I don't know if this is just a pet peeve or if it should become a new axiom. I'm really tired of people not getting why it is we celebrate things. Tons of our founding fathers and mothers did not shed blood so that America's birth could be reduced to a numerical calendar date. It takes all the meaning out of this passionate celebration of freedom to say "Happy 4th" This is akin to those people who insist on saying "Happy Turkey Day" when it's Thanksgiving and gratitude is what it's all about.

This is seen in more than just the US. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in Mexico.
I do feel that stating the date is watering down the significance of what we are celebrating. It has been turned into a grill out/drinking/fireworks/parade holiday. A celebration without remembering why it's a great day and country. Our government probably wants us to forget what makes this country great. After all, we now have a banking system/government that is very similar to the same ones we revolted against in the first place.
